Welcome to 4th Grade Literacy with Ms. Cornell and Ms. Sienko!
Currently we are in Cycle 1.
Cycle 1 is all about realistic fiction. As a class we are reading Crash by Jerry Spinelli and studying the development of the main characters throughout the text. Students are working on many reading skills, but are focused on four foundational skills of 4th grade reading. Students are growing their inferring skills and supporting inferences with strong evidence, summarizing texts and using key events to determine the theme of a text, studying characters in-depth to see how they change and interact with other characters and settings in the text, and learning to better tackle determining the meaning of new words and phrases that they encounter as they read higher-level texts. Students are writing personal narratives and realistic fiction stories of their own. |
Vocabulary
Vocabulary is an important part of literacy in 4th grade. While students continue to work on spelling through their writing, the instructional focus is on growing students' vocabularies to meet the demands of higher-level texts and prepare them for the years beyond 4th grade. Students have weekly vocabulary lists and vocabulary tests every Friday.

Homework
Every student is expected to read at home every night. Even on busy evenings, finding time to read in the car, read before bed, or read together is the best way to support a student's reading growth at home. In addition to reading, students have weekly vocabulary tasks to complete before the test on Friday. Students receive their new words on Monday and have until Friday to turn in their work.
